Shopify publishes six hiring steps, and the order can change by role. You may get a short call, a craft assessment that includes a brief predictive test, a Life Story conversation about your career, and meetings with three to five future coworkers. Tell the career as an honest story, and show that using AI is a habit.

Shopify publishes six hiring steps, and the order can vary by role. After you apply, there may be a short call with a recruiter or hiring manager. A craft assessment of an hour or more follows, including a brief predictive test. Next is the Life Story, a conversation of up to an hour with a recruiter about your career, and last you meet three to five future co-workers. Tell your career as an honest story, and show that you use AI in your work as a habit.

## Practice questions

- **Shopify's Life Story interview asks about the trophies and the bruises. Walk me through your career, including the decision you would make differently.** Shopify says the Life Story is about the themes of your career, what you learned, and how you made a difference. The recruiter follows your choices, so a polished highlight reel with no misses reads as evasive.
- **A merchant asks why they should let AI agents in ChatGPT or Gemini sell their products, since the shopper never visits their store. What do you tell them?** Shopify's Spring '26 Edition put AI channels in the admin and made merchants eligible for Shopify Catalog by default. The interviewer wants to see you take the merchant's fear about losing the customer relationship seriously while still making the case.
- **Shopify says AI searches powered by Shopify Catalog convert at twice the rate of those using scraped data. How would you use that claim with a head of ecommerce at a mid-size brand, and what would you check first?** Merchant-facing proof has to survive a skeptical operator. This tests whether you can turn a platform statistic into a reason to act, and whether you know where it might not hold.
- **Tobi Lütke's 2025 memo says teams must show why AI can't do the work before asking for more headcount. Suppose you want a second product marketer for the next Edition. Make the case.** Reflexive AI use is a stated baseline at Shopify, and AI usage questions were added to performance and peer reviews. A strong answer shows what you already automate and why the remaining work needs a person.
- **The Spring '26 Edition had more than 150 updates. Pick the three you would lead with for a small merchant, and explain what you would leave out.** Editions are Shopify's main launch moments, and most of the audience has little time. The question tests prioritization and your ability to talk to a merchant who is not a marketer.
- **The Universal Commerce Protocol is an open standard Shopify co-developed with Google, and anyone can build on it. How do you market an open standard in a way that still benefits Shopify?** Open standards help the whole market, including competitors. This probes whether you can explain why being first and default on a shared standard is still a reason to choose Shopify.
- **Sidekick Pulse now greets merchants on a redesigned admin home with suggested next actions. Position it to a merchant who has never opened Sidekick.** This is the kind of task a craft assessment might set, where Shopify says someone in your craft learns how you approach the work. The best answers start from a merchant problem and end with one clear first action.

## Shopify’s six hiring steps, from the craft assessment to the Life Story

Shopify describes its process on its careers FAQ and says the order and number of interviews may vary by role and team. Its current outline has six steps.

The Shopify hiring process, as Shopify describes it
| Step | What Shopify says | What to prepare |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1. Apply | Pick one or two roles, and apply to no more than two in thirty days | A resume tuned to the role you want most |
| 2. Initial call | Depending on the role, fifteen to thirty minutes with a recruiter or hiring manager, where you can ask who you will meet and about exercises | Questions about the stages and any exercise |
| 3. Craft assessment | Sixty to seventy-five minutes with at least one person in your craft, plus a brief predictive assessment of how you approach problems and notice details | One piece of product marketing work you can explain in depth |
| 4. The Life Story | Thirty to sixty minutes, conversation style, with a recruiter, on the themes of your career, what you learned, and how you made a difference | Your career as one honest story |
| 5. Meet the team | Three to five future co-workers, up to an hour each, who may ask how you would solve a problem and communicate it | A structured way to think out loud |
| 6. Decision | The hiring team meets and decides using feedback from people of varying levels and perspectives | Nothing, beyond a thank-you note |

Shopify doesn't publish a timeline. It says timelines vary by role and number of applicants, and that recruiters and coordinators support you throughout. For marketing, ask on the first call what the craft assessment involves and whether the team round includes a problem to solve live.

Other accounts of the Shopify process may put the Life Story straight after the first call. The current page puts the craft assessment first, and Shopify says the order can change by team. Confirm yours on the first call.

## What product marketing work looks like at Shopify now

Marketing at Shopify spans Shop app affiliate and creator marketing, revenue event marketing, and strategy and operations for revenue marketing, alongside product marketing. Product marketing roles open and close quickly, so set an alert on the careers site.

Whatever the team, the audience is the same. Shopify's customers are merchants, from first-time entrepreneurs to large brands, and most are not marketers. Much of Shopify's product news arrives through Editions, the collections of updates it announces together. The Spring '26 Edition on June 17, 2026 had more than 150 updates, and a product marketer there helps decide what a busy merchant hears first.

The business is growing fast. For the second quarter of 2026, Shopify reported revenue of $3.58 billion, up 34 percent, and gross merchandise volume of $115.6 billion. Its free cash flow margin was 18 percent, and it expects revenue growth in the low thirties for the third quarter. President Harley Finkelstein called it a monster quarter and said AI is expanding what is possible for every kind of business.

## What Shopify is selling merchants in 2026

The Spring '26 Edition was built around the idea that as AI makes software cheap to build, shoppers will expect to buy wherever they are. Shopify wants its merchants to be there first. Know these pieces by name.

- **Shopify Catalog.** A structured dataset of products that AI agents can search. Eligible merchants are in it by default, and it syndicates product details to ChatGPT, Copilot, the Shop app, and others.
- **The Universal Commerce Protocol.** An open standard for how agents and merchants interact from discovery to checkout, co-developed with Google. Shopify merchants are enabled by default, and developers can now build on it.
- **Agentic Storefronts in the admin.** One place to turn AI channels on or off. Merchants see orders and conversions from ChatGPT, Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search, the Gemini app, and Shop, and can check which AI queries they rank for.
- **Sidekick.** Shopify's AI assistant now reaches third-party apps through extensions for more than 15 partners, including Klaviyo. Sidekick Pulse turns sales, traffic, and inventory data into suggested next actions on the admin home.

Shopify backs the story with proof points. It says Catalog-powered AI searches convert at twice the rate of scraped data, and it quotes merchants earning revenue from AI channels. In an interview, expect to argue the merchant's side, since merchants are asked to trust agents they don't control with customers they worked to win. Prepare an answer that names that fear and explains what the merchant keeps, such as order data and conversion reporting in the admin.

## Reflexive AI use as a hiring signal at Shopify

In April 2025, CEO Tobi Lütke posted an internal memo publicly, saying he was sharing it because it was being leaked. Its headline was that reflexive AI usage is now a baseline expectation at Shopify. The memo says AI should dominate the prototype phase of projects and that Shopify would add AI usage questions to performance and peer reviews. Teams must also show why AI can't do the work before asking for more headcount or resources.

The memo ties this to two Shopify values, be a constant learner and thrive on change, and describes Shopify as a red queen race where you keep running to stay in place. Expect it to shape interviews, where a product marketer who says they are curious about AI but can't describe a workflow will struggle.

- Pick one real task from the last month where AI did a large share of the work, such as competitor research, a first draft, or analysis of merchant feedback.
- Be ready to say which tool you used, how you gave it context, what it got wrong, and what you shipped.
- Have a view on where AI should not be trusted in product marketing, and why.

## A Life Story worksheet to fill in before the call

Shopify's advice is to reflect on the experiences that brought you here, including hits and misses, turning points, proud moments, and your hardest projects. A worksheet makes that concrete. Fill in one row per job or major turn in your career, then say the whole thing out loud in under twenty minutes.

A worksheet for the Shopify Life Story interview
| Prompt | What to write | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Why you joined | The real reason, even if it was money or location | The recruiter looks for honest themes |
| A trophy | One result, with a number and your specific part | Shows how you made a difference |
| A bruise | One mistake or miss, and what it cost | Shopify asks for these directly |
| What you learned | One sentence you still apply | Connects each move to the next |
| Why you left | A plain explanation without blame | Recruiters probe transitions |

Then prepare for the other steps. For the craft assessment, pick one launch or positioning project you know in depth. For the team round, practice solving a merchant problem out loud, using the [go-to-market strategy](https://mokk.ai/pmm-questions/gtm-strategy) questions. The [tell me about yourself guide](https://mokk.ai/guides/pmm-interview-tell-me-about-yourself) helps compress the Life Story into an opening, and the [think on your feet guide](https://mokk.ai/guides/pmm-think-on-your-feet) helps with live problems.

## Where Shopify loops go wrong

- **Treating the Life Story as a resume walk.** Shopify wants themes and lessons, and a list of titles and dates doesn't give the recruiter either.
- **Hiding the bruises.** Shopify names them as part of the conversation, and leaving them out makes the rest harder to believe.
- **Talking to marketers instead of merchants.** Most Shopify merchants are running a business, not a campaign. Keep your language plain.
- **Vague AI answers.** After the 2025 memo, general enthusiasm about AI won't carry you, so describe a specific workflow.

## Questions to ask Shopify

- What does the craft assessment involve for product marketing, and who runs it?
- How does the team decide which updates lead an Edition?
- How are merchants responding to AI channels and Agentic Storefronts so far?
- How does AI show up in this team's daily work and in performance reviews?
- What would a strong first ninety days look like?

The [questions to ask your interviewer](https://mokk.ai/guides/pmm-questions-to-ask-interviewer) guide explains how to choose two and use them well.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the Shopify Life Story interview?** It is a thirty to sixty minute conversation with a recruiter about the themes of your career, what you learned, and how you made a difference. Shopify says it is interested in the trophies and the bruises, and that it should feel like a two-sided conversation.
