Head of product marketing interview and what founders ask

A head of product marketing hire is often the first person in the seat. The loop asks whether you can invent the function without a template.

Founders and the head of sales want to know what you would do in the first month, what you would refuse to do, and whether you can write. You are also being checked for taste. They have lived without a PMM, so they need to believe the seat is worth the hire.

A founder loop with no shared rubric

Some companies run this like a director search, with a panel and a presentation. Many startups do not. You might get a founder, the sales lead, and a working session with a doc.

Ask who you will meet and whether they want a written point of view before the onsite. The startup and big company guide is about how the process changes with company size. This page is the questions a founder asks when the seat does not exist yet.

Arrive with a point of view on the buyer and a short list of work you would do yourself.

What you would do before you hire anyone

The question underneath most of these loops is “What happens in the first thirty days, while you are still the whole team?”

  • Listen on purpose. A set of calls with customers and with reps, and the question you would ask both.
  • Write the story once. One page on who it is for, what it replaces, and what you will not claim.
  • Equip the people selling today. A talk track and a few proof points, even if the deck is ugly.
  • Name what you are ignoring. A segment, a channel, or a launch idea you would park.

The 30-60-90 guide is useful here if you keep the first month concrete. A plan that starts with “build the brand” tells a founder you will be busy and they will not have anything to sell.

Taste, shown on their product

Use the product before you walk in. Founders can tell when the point of view came from the homepage and when it came from an hour in the app.

Bring one change you would make to how they describe themselves, and one thing you would leave alone. The second part matters. A critique with no restraint sounds like you need the job to feel important.

A first-PMM answerInvented example
““I used the product for an afternoon and read the last ten call notes your seller sent me. You describe this as a platform. The buyers in those notes describe one job, which is getting a report out before the Monday meeting. I would lead with that job for the next quarter and park the platform language until a second product gives you the right to it. I would write the talk track myself and ride along on five calls before I hired anyone.””

The sales lead is a co-interviewer

In a first-PMM hire, sales has been doing your job badly or well enough to be proud of it. Either way, they have opinions.

Show you can make them faster without taking the customer relationship away. A story about a talk track the field used is worth more than a brand workshop. Say what you handed them and what changed on the next calls.

Hiring the second person, later

They may ask who you would hire next. Have an answer that matches the bottleneck you named.

If the field is the constraint, the next hire might be someone who can live in deals. If the story is still mush, the next hire might be a strong writer. Say which problem you would still own yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is head of product marketing the same as a director?
Sometimes the titles are interchangeable. In a small company, head of often means you are the first and only PMM. Ask whether anyone is in the seat today, and who has been doing the work.
What if I have only worked inside large teams?
Say the pages you wrote and the calls you ran. Then say which parts of a big-company motion you would leave behind. Founders are listening for that edit.
Do I need a presentation?
Ask. If they want one, make it a point of view on their buyer and a first-month plan. The presentation guide helps with the room.
How do I talk about building a function without sounding theoretical?
Name the artifact. A one-page narrative, a talk track, a set of calls. Functions are abstract. Pages and conversations are not.
What should I ask the founder?
Ask which sentence on the homepage they no longer believe, and which deal they lost for a reason that was not price. You will learn more from those two answers than from a strategy speech.
