San Francisco

What this role does

Practice for this role

Your first mock interview is free (10 minutes). No card needed.

What you would do

You set strategy for one component of the ads business, and you write messaging for each advertiser audience. Customer research, market analysis, and competitive insights show where positioning or adoption is weak. You own the go-to-market plan from planning through launch, and the adoption work after it.

Product and Engineering hear advertiser needs before the roadmap is settled. Sales and Partnerships receive narratives, decks, one-pagers, and launch notes. Data Science and Analytics help you choose the metrics and judge whether adoption moved. You raise performance, safety, policy, and trust risks with the teams who own them, and you help peers make launches and enablement repeatable. The seat is in San Francisco.

Why OpenAI is hiring now

OpenAI has not published a reason for the opening. This is our read. People use OpenAI products to get answers, and a story that only covers ad performance leaves Sales to explain whether those answers stay trustworthy. A strong first quarter produces positioning a seller can repeat, and a launch plan that already names the safety or policy risk.

Who would do this well

No year minimum is stated. OpenAI wants strategy you set yourself and a product you took to market, especially in advertising, marketing technology, platforms, or data and AI. Consulting, investment banking, corporate strategy, and venture capital all fit. You should know measurement, targeting and relevance, creative, auctions, and the tradeoffs among them. Interviews, surveys, adoption data, and experiments are how you decide, and you influence Product, Engineering, and Sales without managing them.

How to prep tonight

Write two one-pagers, one for a performance advertiser and one for a brand advertiser. Mark the sentence on each that Sales should not say until a measurement result exists. Add the question you would take to Data Science, and the trust or policy risk you would put in the launch note before anyone publishes it.

What OpenAI will look for in your examples

Bring a roadmap change you made from advertiser research, and the explanation you would give a buyer who is not an ads specialist.

“Partner with Product and Engineering to bring advertiser needs and market insights into roadmap discussions and product decisions.”

“Communicate clearly and persuasively, translating technical concepts into differentiated customer value for a range of audiences.”

Common questions

Which ads product is this?
One component of the advertising business, not the whole portfolio. Ask which component in the first conversation. Measurement, auctions, and creative are worth prepping either way.
Who sets the metrics?
You define them with Sales, Partnerships, Data Science, and Analytics. Use the result to change the message or the plan.
What if your background is consulting?
That background fits. You still need measurement, targeting, creative, and auctions, and a product you have taken to market.
