Interview format

Decagon brought on its first PMM recently and is now layering leadership on top. The function exists and is young. Every public interview report comes from engineering hires, so there is no published product marketing process.

Do not prepare for the pair programming round or the vector search system design you will read about. Those belong to engineering. What you can prepare from is the hiring bar, which sits at five or more years of product marketing, ideally in high growth SaaS or AI.

Decagon also wants translation of technical concepts across personas, launches owned end to end, competitive research and customer insight, and comfort building a product marketing function from scratch. That is a wide brief for a young team. Ask the recruiter what the loop looks like on your first call, because none of it is public.

Sample questions

6 questions
  1. Q1

Sierra raised about $950M at a $15.8B valuation and targets your buyer. What is the differentiation?

Both companies sell AI support agents to enterprise support leaders, and the demos look similar. They want to see you find ground in deployment, channel coverage or outcome accountability instead of a feature list.

FrameworkCompetitive differentiation (proof of outcome, deployment model, channel breadth, customer evidence)

    Answer this one out loud
  2. Q2

Decagon prices on outcomes. How do you defend per resolution pricing when a competitor offers a flat platform fee?

The pricing model is a positioning choice, and support leaders have strong opinions about both. This tests whether you can make outcome pricing feel like shared risk instead of a meter running in the background.

FrameworkPricing narrative (risk alignment, budget predictability, value proof, objection handling)

    Answer this one out loud
  3. Q3

Salesforce agreed to buy Fin for about $3.6B and will fold it into Agentforce. What changes for you?

Support AI becoming a suite feature is the structural threat to the business. They want to see whether you can defend a standalone purchase to a buyer whose CRM vendor now offers something adjacent with less friction.

FrameworkSuite versus point solution (depth argument, switching analysis, integration story, buyer risk framing)

    Answer this one out loud
  4. Q4

A VP of support asks whether your agent will shrink her team. How do you answer?

The buyer is often the person whose headcount the product affects. This tests emotional intelligence in your messaging and whether you can build a story about what the team does with the time it gets back.

FrameworkBuyer empathy messaging (role reframing, deflection with quality, team outcome story, proof from similar accounts)

    Answer this one out loud
  5. Q5

Avis Budget, Cash App, Chime and Duolingo all use Decagon. How would you build proof out of that list?

The logo list is strong and the case studies are thin. They want a plan for turning customers into evidence, including which deflection and CSAT metrics you would push to get on the record.

FrameworkCustomer proof program (metric selection, reference tiering, case study pipeline, incentive design)

    Answer this one out loud
  6. Q6

Revenue went from about $44M to about $100M in seven months with almost no marketing team. What do you build first?

This question describes the job you would be taking. They want prioritization under constraint and whether you start with what unblocks sales or with a brand exercise that will not matter for a year.

FrameworkFunction building (first 90 days, sales enablement priority, messaging foundation, hiring sequence)

    Answer this one out loud

What they look for

Comfort with a blank page is the first filter. Decagon needs someone who can build product marketing process from scratch, which means no templates, no launch calendar and no analyst program waiting for you. Bring an example where you were the first marketer somewhere.

Multi persona translation matters because the buying group spans support leaders, operations, IT and sometimes finance. Each one cares about a different number. Show that you can hold the same product story at four levels of technical depth.

Competitive instinct gets tested throughout. With Sierra heavily funded and Salesforce absorbing Fin, the picture changes monthly, so they want someone who tracks it as a habit. Be able to say what shifted last quarter without checking your notes.

Insider tips

Run a support conversation with a Decagon powered agent before you interview. Several of their customers are consumer brands you can reach in a few minutes, so go find one and push it until it breaks. That experience is worth more than any deck you could build.

Build a competitive teardown of Sierra and Fin and bring it with you. Decagon has no established product marketing leadership, so evidence that you already do the work beats describing how you would do it.

Ask what marketing reports into and who owns messaging today. At roughly $100M in revenue with a function this young, the answer tells you whether you are walking into a build or a cleanup. It also signals to the hiring manager that you have done this before.

Reading Decagon's questions is the easy part. Answering one out loud, cold, with a follow-up coming is the part that falls apart in the room. That's what Mokk trains.
