Interview format

Cognition does not publish an interview process, and no PMM has described one publicly. The marketing org is young and building out in the US and across EMEA at the same time, so what you can prepare from is the hiring bar and the shape of the business.

The bar here covers storytelling across video, written work and events. Cognition wants sales collateral reps reach for, technical curiosity, and design sensibility in the same person. Speed is not negotiable, and the standard is iterating in hours instead of weeks. Travel for customer shoots comes with the work.

Since round counts and timelines are not published anywhere, ask the recruiter on your first call what the loop involves. Bring work you can show, because a portfolio carries more weight here than a rehearsed case answer. And treat the forward deployed engineer case study you may read about as belonging to that role.

Sample questions

6 questions
  1. Q1

Devin runs autonomously and Windsurf sits inside the editor. How do you position both in one portfolio without confusing the buyer?

Cognition acquired Windsurf in July 2025 and now sells an agent and an IDE to overlapping audiences. This tests whether you can give each product a clear job instead of letting the two compete for the same budget line.

FrameworkPortfolio architecture (job to be done per product, buyer mapping, overlap rules, upgrade path)

    Answer this one out loud
  2. Q2

Cognition cut Pro pricing to $15 a month to undercut Cursor. How would you message that without telling enterprise buyers the product is cheap?

Price cuts travel upmarket whether you want them to or not. They want to see if you can separate the individual developer tier from enterprise value and hold pricing power at the top of the range.

FrameworkPricing narrative (tier segmentation, value story per segment, enterprise proof, competitive framing)

    Answer this one out loud
  3. Q3

An engineering leader tells you she will not let an agent merge code without a human reviewing it. How do you message autonomy to her?

Distrust of unattended agents is the main objection Cognition meets at enterprise accounts. They want to see you answer it with a specific adoption path instead of arguing that the fear is misplaced.

FrameworkObjection handling (risk acknowledgement, staged autonomy model, control surfaces, evidence from similar teams)

    Answer this one out loud
  4. Q4

Goldman Sachs, Citi and the US Army all use Devin, and none of them will go on camera. How do you build proof?

Regulated and defense buyers rarely approve case studies. Cognition still needs credibility with the next enterprise buyer, so they want to know what proof you can build when the logo cannot be used.

FrameworkProof strategy (anonymized outcomes, third party validation, benchmark data, peer reference program)

    Answer this one out loud
  5. Q5

Developers adopt Devin on their own and then procurement shows up. How do you build marketing that serves both?

Bottoms up adoption and enterprise procurement want opposite things from your content. The question is whether you can run a developer motion and a security review motion without one undermining the other.

FrameworkDual motion GTM (developer content, champion enablement, procurement assets, handoff triggers)

    Answer this one out loud
  6. Q6

Cognition went from roughly $37M in annualized revenue to around $900M in about a year. What does marketing need to build to keep up?

Growth that fast leaves the marketing function behind the business. They want to see you prioritize the few things that unblock sales instead of building a full marketing stack at once.

FrameworkPrioritization (revenue blockers first, sequencing plan, hiring plan, what you deliberately skip)

    Answer this one out loud

What they look for

Technical curiosity is the filter. You are selling an autonomous engineer to people who write code for a living, and they will test whether you understand what the agent does. Read the Devin documentation, run a task through it, and be able to describe where it worked and where it stalled.

Speed shows up in how you answer, not only in what you claim. Cognition measures iteration in hours. Concrete answers about work you shipped in days will land better than a polished quarterly plan.

Range across formats matters more here than at most companies. They want video, written work, event presence and sales collateral from one person. If your portfolio is all launch decks and blog posts, find or make something that shows you can direct a customer shoot or write a script.

Insider tips

Use both products before you interview. Give Devin a task that takes a few hours and watch what it does with ambiguity, then spend an hour inside Windsurf. Being able to say where each one fits is the fastest credibility you can build in a first conversation.

Bring a portfolio link and expect to walk through it. With no published process, work samples are the part you control. Pick three pieces in three formats and be ready to explain the decision behind each one.

Have a view on Cursor. Cognition competes with Cursor, Claude Code and GitHub Copilot, and the Pro price cut was aimed squarely at one of them. If you cannot describe how those products differ in daily use, the positioning questions will go badly.

Reading Cognition's questions is the easy part. Answering one out loud, cold, with a follow-up coming is the part that falls apart in the room. That's what Mokk trains.
