What is the Uber PMM interview like?

Uber does not publish a product marketing interview sequence. The business is a set of marketplaces, and a message that helps riders can hurt drivers, couriers, or merchants. Ask your recruiter which side of which marketplace the seat owns, including advertising if that is the team, and prepare a launch that names the side you are willing to disappoint.

Uber does not publish a product marketing interview sequence. The company is a set of marketplaces. Riders, eaters, drivers, couriers, and merchants do not win from the same message. Advertising is its own motion on top of those trips. Ask which side of which marketplace the seat owns. Prepare a launch that names the side you are willing to disappoint, because a story that pleases everyone is not a marketplace story.

Uber does not publish a product marketing loop

Uber's careers site posts roles. It does not post the stages of a product marketing interview. Anything you read about a fixed number of rounds is someone else's experience, usually from another job family. Ask your recruiter.

Get the list, the names of the functions in the room, and whether there is a case. Marketplace companies like a live problem. The case study guide is worth doing even if they have not promised one.

Every launch picks a side of the marketplace

Rides need riders and drivers. Eats needs eaters, couriers, and restaurants. Freight needs shippers and carriers. A discount for one side changes the other side's night.

In the interview, say the side you are optimizing and the side you are asking to wait. If you cannot name the second side, you do not have a plan. You have a slogan.

Uber marketplaces and the trade a product marketer has to name
MarketplaceOne sideThe side your message can hurt
RidesRidersDrivers, if the promo creates trips they cannot earn on
EatsEatersCouriers and restaurants, if the offer ignores their time
FreightShippersCarriers, if the load is not worth the trip
AdsAdvertisersRiders and eaters, if the placement gets in the way

Advertising is a product, not a footnote

Uber sells ads around trips. If your seat is there, prepare a buyer who is a brand or a local business, and a person in the back of a car who did not ask for the ad. Both have to be in the answer.

If your seat is not ads, still know the business exists. A consumer launch can collide with a paid placement. Mention that you would check. The go-to-market questions are a good drill for choosing which motion leads.

Prepare one city and one disappointed side

  • Take one trip and one delivery in a city you know. Note what the app asked you to do.
  • Write the rider version and the driver version of the same change.
  • Name the metric for each side. Trips are not enough.
  • Prepare a story where you chose one customer over another and can defend it.

The messaging questions help you keep the two versions from collapsing into one headline.

Ask which marketplace before you ask anything else

  • Which marketplace, and which side, does this seat own?
  • How many conversations are in the loop, and is there a case?
  • How do you handle a launch that is good for demand and bad for supply?
  • Where does advertising sit relative to this team?
  • What would you want true ninety days in?

The both-sides answer that decides nothing

People try to please riders and drivers in the same paragraph. It sounds fair and it is not a decision. Pick. Then say how you would watch the side you deprioritized.

The other miss is a global line with no city in it. Uber is local. A sentence that could run in any app is too vague for this loop.

Practice questions

6 questions
  1. Q1

A rider promotion will bring more trips and fewer drivers online at the hour you need them. Do you run it? What do you tell the driver team?

Uber product marketing is a supply and demand problem. The interviewer wants a choice, the side you are hurting, and how you would know within a week.

    Answer this one out loud
  2. Q2

Eats and Rides share a brand. They do not share a job to be done. Write one line that can sit on both apps, and one line that must stay off one of them.

A shared brand is not a shared buyer. Someone opening the app for dinner and someone opening it for a ride should not get the same promise.

    Answer this one out loud
  3. Q3

An advertiser wants to buy the moment after a trip ends. What would you refuse to sell, and why?

Uber Advertising is a real business, and the trip is also a person's time. This tests whether you can sell attention without treating the rider as inventory only.

    Answer this one out loud
  4. Q4

Freight buyers are not riders. How would you explain Uber to a shipper who has never opened the consumer app?

The marketplace skills transfer. The language does not. A strong answer drops consumer metaphors and talks about a load, a carrier, and a date.

    Answer this one out loud
  5. Q5

Pick a city you know. What is different about the marketplace there, and how would that change a global message?

Uber's product is local even when the brand is global. Interviewers want a specific constraint, such as airport rules, weather, or how people pay.

    Answer this one out loud
  6. Q6

Tell me about a launch that helped one customer and hurt another. How did you decide, and what did you measure after?

This is the story to bring. They will ask who you told, and whether you would run it again.

    Answer this one out loud

Common questions

Does Uber publish a product marketing interview process?
No. Ask your recruiter how many conversations you will have and whether there is a case. Do not treat a writeup from another job family as the plan.
What is the hard part of product marketing at Uber?
The marketplaces. A message that helps riders can hurt drivers, and the same pattern shows up for eaters, couriers, merchants, and shippers. Name the side you are willing to disappoint.
Does Uber have an ads business to prepare for?
Yes. Uber sells advertising around trips. If that is your seat, prepare the advertiser and the person taking the trip. If it is not, still know the team exists.
Should I talk about rides if I am interviewing for delivery?
Only to show you know they are different. Eats has restaurants and couriers. Rides does not. Use the vocabulary of the seat.
What should I do in the product before I interview?
Take a trip and place an order in a city you know. Write down one thing the app asked of you and one thing it asked of the other side.

Interview processes change, so confirm the stages with your recruiter.

Reading Uber's questions is the easy part. Answering one out loud, cold, with a follow-up coming is the part that falls apart in the room. That's what Mokk trains.
